Hitachi outs a pair of 4TB HDDs for your storing pleasure

We here at Engadget believe that, while keeping data in the cloud is certainly convenient, one can never have too much local storage space. Hitachi shares our enthusiasm for commodious HDDs, and has rolled out a pair of 4TB drives to keep all your movies, music, and photos close to home. For those wanting to up the ante in their desktop machine, the Deskstar 5K4000 should do the trick with a SATA 6Gb/s connection and 32MB buffer. Its stablemate, the Touro Desk External Drive, brings the same HDD in an onyx enclosure and connects to your computer via USB 3.0 -- plus you get 3GB of cloud storage free from Hitachi. (Who says you can't eat your cake and have it too?) The 5K4000 is available now for a penny under $400, while the Touro will cost $420 once it hits the market in January.

Congress At Impasse Over Must-Pass Measures

The thing Democrats really want is the thing Republicans hate. And the thing Republicans want is the thing Democrats are against. And yet, somehow between now and Christmas, most political watchers believe the partisan differences will quietly be worked out.

Verizon prepping a 4G LTE Xperia Play?

Xperia Play 4G LTE

Are you a fan of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, but not so much a fan of it only being a 3G device on Verizon? You might well soon get to have the best of both words, if this internal traning registration is on the level. We're told the Dec. 12 and Dec. 14 training indeed is for Big Red, and we've confirmed with a second source that indeed an LTE Xperia Play exists.

So will we see it? And when will we see it? News at 11.

Checking in on Google Currents - 80,000 subscribed to AC

Android Central on Google Currents

So we're less than a week out from the launch of Google Currents, the Flipboard/Pulse competitor that presents your favorite websites in an easy-to-read magazine-type format. And we were lucky to get in on the ground floor. Question was, would anybody be using it?

I posed the question to ol' CrackBerry Kevin. "How many subscribers do you think we have?" I asked. "Oh, I dunno," he said. "Maybe 4,000."

Try 80,000, Mr. Michaluk, according to the tally in the app. That's 80,000 and counting. We'll all have to see how much of an effect Currents has on our analytics before declaring it a success, of course. Subscribers are one thing. (Scratch that, they're 80,000 very awesome things.) But we've still got to see how much everybody's using Currents to actually read content.

So for now, be sure to subscribe. Be sure to read. And be sure to tell your friends. Hit up the link below to subscribe.

Subscribe now to the Android Central Edition on Google Currents

Spherical hexapod robot walks like a crab, dances like the Bogle (video)

Kåre Halvorsen (aka Zenta) is something of a genius in the robotic arts, as testified by the latest development in his long-running MorpHex project. By adding curved polycarbonate panels to its six feet and upper half, he's given his creation the ability to curl up into a ball when it gets tired of scuttling. Alas, he hasn't managed to make it roll around yet, or indeed fly, but the video after the break is still pretty amazing -- and almost as hypnotic as that robotic worm we caught doing the limbo.

Watching People Pull Extreme Tricks on a Pogo Stick Is Spine Bending [Video]

Pogo sticks always amused the hell out of me. Up. Down. Up. Down. Repeat. These guys, however, take pogo sticks to the next level, it's more like: Up. Down. Spin. Jump over a woman in a wheelchair. Grind the railing. Up. Down. Go crazy. More »
